Why Your Legs Are Swollen & How to actually Fix It
I might lose every professional relationship after this, but screw it.
6 years doing lymphatic drainage to "fix" swollen legs, $180 an hour.
We don't sell 1 session to you, we sold 10 at once.
My clients loved it.
But almost none of them got better. Not in a way that lasted past the weekend.
For years I told myself that was on them. Too much salt. Not enough water. Not committed enough to the package.
But they were never actually the problem.
Who I am & What do I know
My name is Marcela Duarte.
I specialize in manual lymphatic drainage in São Paulo and spent 6 years working in Miami and Los Angeles.
Lymphatic drainage. You've seen it on TikTok.
Yes, those changes are real. And I did made those happen.
But what we don't tell you is that...
It comes back. And for a long time I felt like a liar for not saying that.
The client who made me quit once and for all
She is Rosa. 46. I treated her for 4 years.
10 sessions at first, then 10 more, then another 10 more, $180 each.
And every session she'd walk in, her legs looked the exact same as the first time, but better, for a while.
One afternoon, she was laughing on the table, saying-
"I've figured it out. I'll just book you the day before anything important."
I think she meant it as a compliment.
And she was right, but I still felt terrible and a liar for trying to avoid the truth.
The truth that Rosa wasn't buying results from me. But only renting them. 48 hours at a time. $180 a go.
And I want to be fair to Rosa, because she had tried everything before she ever got to me.
6 things Rosa tried
Cutting salt down
6 weeks of food she didn't like. Salt only changes how much water your body holds onto. So it did nothing about the water that's already in there.
A gallon of water a day.
Not wrong. Being dehydrated does make retention worse. But she was already drinking plenty.
Herbal water pills
Ended up pissing twice a night. And her ankles were identical in the morning.
Compression socks
Worked until they weren't on your legs because compression holds the liquid and doesn't move it away.
Legs up the wall, 20 minutes a night
Worked too, she'd wake up with light legs. But then gravity pulls it back down, and her legs look even worse in just a couple of hours of the day.
Dry brushing. $12 and a YouTube video
She told me it was completely useless.
And then me. $180 an hour.
I moved her fluid with my hands, so the legs stayed moving for 2 days.
But eventually her calves went back to being swollen because she was sitting all day.
So, 7 things.
6 of them worked on what was going IN.
Only 1 worked on what was coming OUT — and that one cost $180. Every single time.
Why your legs & ankles always swell by 5pm
You have 2 systems that move water around your body.
1st is blood. Your heart pumps it around, whether you want to or not.
2nd is your lymphatic system. That's the drain for liquid.
Its meant to collect extra fluid from your cells and sends it back into your bloodstream.
But when it doesn’t drain fast enough, fluids build up and your legs end up feeling puffy and swollen.
Why is that?
Nothing is pushing it. The drain only moves when you move. So that's also why they call it the calf pump, because it only really moves when you are WALKING.
So think about your actual day.
8 hours at a desk, 12 hours on your feet. Either way you aren't moving, and so aren't your calves.
And the result? Gravity pulls fluid down into your legs for 16 hours, straight.
My advice to my lovely clients & what I now do at home
While I am a lymphatic massager, 6 years of doing massage also means 6 years standing on my feet.
My legs were wrecked.
Obviously, I could not afford $90 to $180 sessions, so naturally, I started looking at what could do the same job mechanically.
Not a foot massager or a vibrating pad - they press DOWN.
And pressing down on a swollen leg accomplishes very little.
Drainage is the opposite motion. You LIFT.
My hands were never pressing into Rosa.
They were lifting the skin away from what's underneath it, opening the space where the fluid sits, and moving it up the leg.
Suction does exactly that. And it is the only thing that makes the same motion my hands made.
I tried the cheap cupping sets first. They work, but they so damn annoying and cannot reach the backs of your own thighs.
So I moved to the electric ones. And the only one that has actually worked so far is Marova's electric Gua Sha.
$59 at the Summer discount.
My old rate was $180. For one hour.
P.S Many of you were asking for the product that I used to achieve my results in the comment section so here it is
